This movie is a digitalized version of a VHS video produced at the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BISA), Brussels in 1982. It illustrates how dipole magnetic field lines (the geomagnetic field) may be assumed to interconnect with those of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF).
The B-field changes produced by shocked supersonic solar wind plasma irregularities in the magnetosheath are ignored, as in Dungey's [1961] idealized magnetosphere model.
The total magnetic field is the superposition of two B-field distributions, as in classical magnetostatic theory in a medium whose magnetic permeability is equal to that of free space (μ = μ0). The magnetic permeability of space plasmas is almost equal to that of vacuum.
